014: Flo is finished

013: Florence, the Machine and the joys of social networking

Quick shoutout to Kendra for being incredibly kind and encouraging in all things, but I particularly appreciated her in regards to blogging, improving the blog, widgets, ideas and all that.
Taking a break from surfwear design to do an illustration based on Florence + the Machine's, Lungs, as a gift for one of my art tutors. This was one of my favourite albums of last year and I like the imagery of the lungs representing Florence's voice - her gift, creativity and expression. Somehow it seemed appropriate for Jane.

I just took some photos yesterday and today to show you how it's progressing. Angles marked in with a 2B pencil, then the figure sketched in in a hard pencil (probably an F) first and then erased to leave a faint ghost of a line as a guide but not enough so it would muddy up the colours. The watercolour wash on over the hair area and lips is a mix of cad orange, rose madder, cad yellow and purple on a wet ground. Rose madder washes for the lungs, and cobalt turquoise on the detailing on the dress. I used copic markers in skin white and a light warm grey on the skin and then inked over the pencil lines with a 0.05, 0.08 black liner and a black ciao copic marker.

So far I've been a bit strapped for time to work on it, just grabbing a few minutes here and there which is incredibly irritating - Give me a good few uninterrupted hours and I'm a happy bunny. Anyhoo, hopefully I'll get it finished tomorrow and post it online via twitter, deviantart, tumblr and of course, here. Phew, I do know about you but having to post in multiple place is quite exhausting. Has to be done though, unfortunately.

Anyway, please let me know what you think. I'd love some feedback. There's already a few areas pointed out which I've got to work on. Kindly meant criticism is always good. :)

I joined twitter this week after contemplating the phenomenon for a long time, not really understanding it and still not much the wiser. It's strangely addictive though.  Please feel free to follow me and I'll follow back. I don't post much but I'll tweet about my illustration, and design work and of course those astute(!) and witty(?) observations on everyday life which is expected of any self respecting twitterer. Of course, you can also add me on facebook.

012: Recent design work

Quick post just to keep the blog up to date with what I've been working on lately. These are sketches for a Uni holiday project which I mentioned in my last post - designing a wardrobe for a professional female surfer taking part in various events (surfing and non-surfing) in Puerto Rico.

Not terribly exciting but practical and pretty, I hope. This is what I have designed for her flight over and for general day wear.

While researching the history of surfwear, I was really inspired by the swimming costumes of the forties and fifties. Just trying to find ways of making them more contemporary. Here are some designs for board shorts and bikinis.

Trying to get some ideas down for a capsule wardrobe which works really hard and fills all the criteria is really tricky. Just trying to keep it wearable and practical. From what I hear, Puerto Rico is quite laid back, even in the clubs, so she'd look a bit out of place in some fancy getup even though I really want to design some aaarrrghhhh!
